Cobbetts Open Doubles 2023
A reasonable entry of 28 teams for the Cobbetts Open Doubles at Burridge on Sunday, May 7th given the clash with various Coronation celebrations, a PE Squad Selection weekend and other event locally at Shedfield. After a cold, grey start, the day gradually brightened up and was pleasantly warm by the afternoon.
There were leagues in the morning with the seven league winners and the next best team progressing to the main competition. Top team with 3 wins +24 were Adrian and Myra Emson from the Chiltern region, it was great to see them playing at Burridge for the first time. The favourites, Marc Franco Llado and Pat Dennis, were close behind on +23. Jim Ireland and Bernie Miles from the home club were just a point behind on +22. The Parley pair of Tom Wilson and Dave Plaistow were on +20 and last year’s runners-up from Handcross, Tony and Peter Kidd, on +15. The other league winners were on 2 wins, Robin Purrott & Jerry Grimley (Parley) +18 and Mark Robertshaw & Hassi Leverett (+14). The best runners-up were the two Daves, Stubbs & Kilshaw, with an impressive +22 from 2 wins.
In the afternoon knock-outs top seeds Adrian and Myra ran out 13-10 winners in a close game with Dave & Dave while Marc and Pat defeated another Cobbetts team in Mark & Hassi.
Tony & Peter made their 2nd successive final by beating Adrian & Myra while Marc & Pat defeated Bernie & Jim, the 3rd Cobbetts team to make the last 8. Congratulations to Marc & Pat who won the final and commiserations to Tony & Peter, runners-up again.
The main consolage final was an all Cobbetts affair with Mark & Hassi taking on the two Daves, Mark and Hassi built a good lead before the Daves fought back and eventually took a 12-10 lead, only to lose 3 points and the game 13-12 the next end!
The Plate competition saw half of the teams from Cobbetts but the semi-final stage saw the remaining two Cobbetts teams knocked-out. The trophy was won by the Crondall/Bordon pairing of Paul and James. They defeated Stuart Brown and Rob Coniam from Muscliff in the final.
The Plate Consolage final was almost the reverse of last year, Dave Lucas runner-up last year (with Marc Franco Llado) this time (with Ali Stubbs) beating last year’s winners Alex Hepburn and Kevin Williams!
There were 3 more Cobbetts players in the Wooden Spoon Final, With Harrison (Crondall) and Steve Mills defeating Paul and Janet. The Spoon consolage was won by Leo and Ray. While Carrie & Paula won all 3 matches in their ODNM league.
Many thanks to Chris Barron for his morning bacon rolls and lunchtime burgers and hot dogs. Also a big thank you to all the other helpers with the food and the raffle, the providers of cake and raffle prizes and those who helped with the general organisation of the day.
