Cobbetts Open Doubles 2003

A great pity that only 21 teams entered (and 20 turned up – I wonder if ‘Hugo and Jimmy’ are still lost!) as for the second year running this competition was played in glorious warm sunshine on a Saturday afternoon at Burridge. Those who played enjoyed another of Pete Young’s excellent BBQs and some very good but friendly petanque. Many thanks to the teams who travelled from afar – Lamb, Leatherhead, Adur, Croydon and Crondall but what happened to the locals? They can’t all have been watching Saints play the Hammers!

A 2 p.m. start and timed games of 40 minutes saw the competition completed by 8p.m. and there was even time for a break in play to watch the Grand National (sweepstake won by Pam Treend!). The holders Dave and Kath narrowly lost out in the semi-finals.The score being tied at 10-10 when time was called but an extra deciding end saw the winning point go to Pam and Elwyn. The final was won by Paul and Sheila who seem to like this terrain having triumphed here in the Regional Summer Doubles a couple of years ago!
