Cobbetts Open Doubles 2010

Sunday, April 11th 2010

There were 20 teams at Burridge on a lovely spring day for the Cobbetts Open Doubles. Dave & Alan, last year’s winners, were trying to defend their title and started well by being one of the five teams to win all of their three morning league games. Four of these teams continued this success in the first round matches in the afternoon to reach the semi-finals, with Arundel being the team to miss out.

The semi-finals brought together two Cobbetts teams with Dave & Alan just beating Mike & Ali 13-10 in a game that only lasted six high scoring ends! The other semi-final saw a comfortable win for Mark & Richard against the Oxshott team of Frank & Christine. Dave & Alan became the first team to take any points off Mark & Richard in the afternoon games but this was not enough for them to retain their title as they fell to a 13-5 defeat in the final.

A case of mistaken identity saw David & Aaron, playing in his first competition, win the Plate Consolage twice! Having beaten Richard & Alan in what they believed was the final it was pointed out that they should have played the Shire Roses so they then played Roz & Lynn and beat them too. Meanwhile Richard & Alan had to play again in the real Plate Final against Steve & Sue their Cobbetts clubmates and lost again! Chris & Terry won the Main Consolage ensuring that five of the six Cobbetts teams entered finished in the prizes!
