Cobbetts Open Doubles 2016

Sunday, April 10th

A full-house of 38 teams was hoped for but with a couple of teams dropping out during the week before, the draw was made with 36 teams. Unfortunately an unprecedented further 5 players pulled out with sickness early in the morning of the competition. With a couple of very last minute substitutions, the final line-up was 35 teams, which unfortunately meant a bye in one of the 9 morning leagues.

Only 4 teams managed to win all of their games in the morning leagues with Dave Plumhoff and Alex Hepburn leading the way. Colin Crofts and Etsil Boukhobza from Cody, Alan Forse and Eric Haskell from the home club, and Glenn and Stuart Floyd were the others to be undefeated. Despite the afternoon draw being seeded based on the morning’s results, of those teams the 4th seeds Glenn and Stuart were alone in managing to get through the first round of the knock-out stage.

Unusually by the semi-finals they were joined by the 14th (Dave and Richard), 15th (Tony and Peter) and 16th seeds (Steve and Oscar)! The two home club pairings both won their games to give us an all-Cobbetts final for the second year running. After a pleasant sunny day, Steve and Oscar proved too strong for Dave and Rich achieving an emphatic 13-2 victory in the final just as the rain arrived.

The final of the main consolage was won by the team from London, Vince and Fadi who beat Dave and Harrison, runners-up in this competition for the second year running. Lee and Diane made it a very successful day on the terrain for the home club beating Julie and Jackie in the final of the Plate competition. An excellent performance from the two juniors, Jamie and Liam, saw them beat the experienced Handur team in the plate consolage semi-final and then go on to play some terrific boules to achieve a resounding victory over Terry and Paula in the final.

The 3 team wooden-spoon was won by Mark and Graham – not a team you’d expect to find playing in that competition!

There were seven qualifiers for the final of ‘Shoot the egg’ and Oscar did the double being the only finalist to hit the egg for a second time to claim the prize.
