It was good to have the Cobbetts Indoor Winter League back at Quob Stables last night after an enforced year off. Nice to see lots of old friends and also to welcome a lot of players new to the sport of petanque. There was a team from Burridge Cricket Club, a team made up of Peter Dawson’s family (a new member at Cobbetts) and the Ship team (Battleships) was largely from Marion Stanbrook’s family. We also welcomed back Avington Newbies, captained by Dave Lucas, who are non-players from his village. Entering for the first time, and not just one but two teams, were Crondall. Thank you to them for making the long journey down and to Muscliff for travelling up from Bournemouth.

The 2nd round of the Cobbetts Indoor Winter League was held on Wednesday, December 8th at Quob Stables. It was great to see the teams new to petanque doing so well. The Burridge Cricketers were 4-2 up against Crondall Falcons but lost the last 3 games while Pete’s Family lost by the same narrow margin to Avington Newbies. The battle for best team of the night was again incredibly close with Dave and Tony just 1 point ahead of Bob and Rick, who in turn were 1 point ahead of Sue and Daena. This means Bob has taken home a 2nd place prize in both the first two rounds.

The 3rd round of the Cobbetts Indoor Winter League was held on Wednesday, January 12th. Unfortunately two of the teams entered did not turn up presumably due to misunderstandings about the change of date from the 19th. It was extremely lucky that the two teams were due to play each other. The teams with newcomers to petanque continued to perform well with Pete’s Family drawing 3-3 with Cobbetts Reprobates before losing the last 3 games. Battleships went one better overcoming River Hamble 5-4 despite the efforts of Callum and Ray from River Hamble who were best team of the night! The battle of the two undefeated teams in League 3 was inevitably also 3-3 after 2 rounds but Shedfield just came out on top 5-4 against Fareham Oaks. Apart from Callum and Ray with +33, the team of the night was lower scoring than usual. In 2nd place, for the 2nd successive month, was Rick Anthill on +20, with a change of Bob from Bish to Thomas! Dave and Graham were very surprised to be 3rd on +18.

Team of the Night

1st Callum Lombard, Ray Oakley (River Hamble) 3 wins +33
2nd Rick Anthill, Bob Thomas (Shedfield) 3 wins +20
3rd Dave Stubbs, Graham Blake (Cobbetts Six) 3 wins +18

The finals of the Cobbetts Winter Indoor League were played at Quob Stables on Wednesday March 16th. The Gold final saw Cobbetts Six up against Crondalliers. After a long and very close first round Cobbetts took a 2-1 lead thanks to a 13-12 win. Three wins in the second round put Cobbetts into an unassailable position and they eventually ran out 7-2 winners with David and Steve also winning Team of the Night. Well done to Cobbetts Six, who won the Gold Cup for the second time in the 10 years they have been running the competition, and well played Crondalliers on taking the runners-up place.

The 3rd and 4th play-off between the other Cobbetts team, Reprobates and Shedfield was very close. After 2 rounds the score was 3-3 but Reprobates managed to win 2 of the last 3 games to take 3rd place with a 5-4 win.

The Silver final between Fareham Oaks and River Hamble also finished 5-4 with Fareham taking home the shield. Another 5-4 win saw the other Fareham team, Acorns, take 3rd place in the Silver competition beating Crondall Falcons.

The Bronze competition was held over the February and March rounds. In the match between Portchester and Muscliff Allsorts, Portchester won the first 3 games only for Muscliff to draw level by winning the next 3! Portchester then won all the final round games for a 6-3 win. In another match poised at 3-3, Burridge Cricketers also won the last 3 games to beat Pete’s Family 6-3. With both teams on 2 wins, Portchester’s bigger win in the February round meant that they just pipped the cricketers to the Bronze Shield. As a small consolation, the cricketing pair of Andy and Simon took 2nd place in Team of the Night. In the third Bronze match Battleships also won their last 3 games to beat Avington Newbies 5-4, with a superb performance from Ben and Dan giving them 3rd place in Team of the Night. It is really great to see these new players, who had not played petanque before this competition began in November, picking up prizes by the end!
