The 7th Cobbetts Poppy Appeal Doubles was held on November 8th. The newly extended terrain meant that the maximum number of entries was increased from 32 to 38 teams. Amazingly this figure was reached over a week before the competition and yet another 6 teams had to be turned away! At 11am play stopped for the traditional two minutes silence for Remembrance Sunday.
There were 8 morning leagues of 4 teams and 1 with 6 teams with the top 16 playing in the main competition in the afternoon, the next 16 in the plate and the final 6 in the wooden spoon. David Cruz successfully defended the title he won last year with Dave Plumhoff, this year playing with fellow Spaniard Dani Soriano. Runners-up were Phil Bradshaw and Ian Bailey who had travelled the furthest to play, coming all the away from Cardiff.
Thanks to the great support shown by club members and all the visiting players, the event surpassed last year’s donation of £400 and raised £500 for the Poppy Appeal.
