We thought 36 players last year was a great turn-out, but this total was smashed yesterday with a record 42 players attending this year’s Cobbetts Christmas Melee!
This was also a perfect number to have 7 games of triples in each round. We had intended to have four 30 minutes games, but the larger numbers meant it took longer between rounds to record the scores, redraw the teams and get the next round started. With the buffet and bar calling, we decided to call a stop after 3 rounds.
We all then retired indoors for an excellent spread of food supplied by all the members, a Christmas quiz compiled by Ali, some fine musical entertainment from the Cobbetts Crooners and finally the prize giving.
There were no fewer than 6 players on 3 wins. Top of the list, and taking home the Cobbetts Christmas Cup, was Julie Power on +20, with runner-up Pauline Buswell close behind on +18. The next places were even closer with Mark White 3rd on +15, Eileen Ashley 4th on +14 and Ali Stubbs 5th on +13. The other undefeated player was last year’s winner, Mark Robertshaw, on +9.
The destination of the Cobbetts Curry Cup, for the highest placed new member, was also a close run thing with both Chris Ralls and daughter Caitlin finishing with a win and a draw, but Chris with -4 was just ahead of Caitlin on -6.
The quiz was also very close with two teams finishing on 35 points, but the winners were Paul, Ruby and Chris with 37 points.
